About the event

The exhibit first turns to Le Guin’s time at Beloit in 1992 as the Mackey Chair of Creative Writing, as revealed through archival letters, photographs, and comments on student work for her six-week creative writing seminar. The next section focuses on Le Guin’s poem “Fragments of the Women’s Writing” and its publication in the Beloit Poetry Journal not long after her college residency. Its third part tells the story of the Wooden Woman, whom Le Guin met during her time at Beloit. This section includes not only the poem Le Guin wrote about her wooden companion, but also the Woman herself! Finally, the exhibit ends by reflecting on the changing meanings of The Dispossessed, through the covers of its various print editions from 1974 to 2024.

Curated by Professor Tamara Ketabgian’s class on science fiction and speculative writing, this exhibit is the last of a series of college and community events…
